Hey Betty,
Sturge-Weber Syndrome is a congenital, non-familial disorder of unknown incidence and cause. A congenital facial birthmark and neurological abnormalities characterize this rare syndrome. The most apparent indication of SWS is a facial birth mark or "Port Wine Stain" present at birth and typically involving at least one upper eyelid and the forehead. Seizure activity is the most common early problem, often starting by one year of age. There is no known reason for these "Port Wine Stains". We have a local child in Trenton, Michigan, Lauryn, who was born with Sturge-Weber. She has an older brother and sister that do not have SWS. Lauryn has seizures and mild strokes.
