A great friend of ours donated his hair to Children With Hairloss!!
The following article was in the Ile Camera today!
For three years, Bill Wade devoted himself to growing his hair to donate to children who experience medical hair loss.
After much research, he decided to donate his hair to Children with Hairloss.
He chose the organization because of its mission and goals regardless of a family’s financial challenges.
Children with Hairloss helps children with any form of medically related hair loss and assists in the form of human hair replacements.
“In many instances, these children are experiencing such unpleasant affects resulting from illness, various medical treatments and the associated emotional distress,” said his wife, Lynn Wade.
“Words cannot express the feeling it is to have the ability to help provide human hair replacement to these children that may help to uplift their spirits and self-confidence.”
The mission of Children with Hairloss is to empower these children to become whole again by making hair available to those who might otherwise not have a means of obtaining the hair they want and need, according to the organization.
Lynn Wade said this truly was a heartwarming experience to have the opportunity to help make a child smile and to feel beautiful, but also to share the purpose of the cause with others.
Bill Wade is a law enforcement officer, and as a condition of his employment, he is required to not have his hair on his uniform collar.
“Each morning before we went to work I pinned his hair up, and even during Bill’s shift change, he continued to get up at 6 a.m. to allow me to pin his hair for work,” Lynn Wade said.
“It was funny at times when responding to people that asked Bill why he has a ‘hair bun’ on the back of his head or why he has a ponytail and some people were critical about him wearing his hair long, but when he explained the purpose, people appeared inspired.”
During Lent for the past several years, Bill Wade volunteered as a cook each Friday during the Lenten fish fry at the Grosse Ile Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
People could see him in the kitchen window with his hair in a bun and covered with a hair net, but still having no idea how long his hair actually was or his purpose for growing it, she said.
An active, 20-year member of Elba Mar Boat Club on Grosse Ile, Wade donated his 14-inch locks at a hair-cutting event organized to benefit Children with Hairloss on July 11 during the club’s weekend regatta.
The members of the club and guests donated about $2,400 that weekend, and seven other people, as well as an anonymous donor, volunteered to donate their hair as well. They are Terry Concessi, Donna Crooks, Jenina Felici, John Massengill, Jennifer Phillips, Johanna Stone and Debbie Tilney.
Stylists Donna Crooks of The Dearborn Hair House and Megan Bagozzi of Salon Sigrid and Linda McDevitt of the Detroit Beach Boat Club donated their time and expertise, providing haircuts and styles to those who donated their hair.
Pam Ryznar and Kathy Koze of Elba Mar helped organize the event.
“We live in a very caring community and we hope that our story will also inspire others to help make a child smile,” the Wades said. “‘Covering young heads to heal young hearts.’”
