Just came home from Meijer's with a 1/2 peck of red delicious apples. Anyone know how many varieties of apples are grown in Michigan? The bag says 14. Linda

Thanks Kevin, there were two apples listed that were not on the side of this Meijer apple bag--
Northern Spy and Cortland
I've never heard of them before. My favorite apple for eating is the Red Delicious, but for inside a pie, I like the Braeburn and the Gala. I like sweet, juicy and a bit crunchy apples. The Empire is a combination of sweet and tart. Not one I would normally purchase.
Each apple has a different appeal/taste. Anyone have a favorite?

Last week i bought 1/2 peck of apples, about 8 or so good sized ones, I can't remember but i think they were Gala's. Any way on Saturday, my grandson Eli was over and we decided to make an apple pie. He was the ingredient mixer. So after all the slicing and mixing, we started to fill our pie crust. We had WAY too many slices, but we mounded them up. ( a few kept disappearing....) When we put on the top crust, it tore, and didn't quite seal right and it was quite bumpy. We called in the ugliest pie I'd ever made.
After it baked, Eli made the pronouncement that "all we have to do Grandma is make the ugliest pies that's how they taste the best!"
So what ever Apple you use, just make sure it's the ugliest looking pie. it will be delicious ;D

Cortland is my favorite from growing up. They are much more popular back East. My parents from MA introduced us to them. Though Fuji are quick rising to the top of the list. (Introduced to me by Leanna Bronni of Bronni Vision, International) ;D ;D

My favorite is the Red Delicious apple and Greg's is the Granny Smith. This time of year I really enjoy Apple Cider warmed up with a Cinnamon stick, And Munchkin Donuts.

The best apple for eating is the Braeburn or McIntosh....juicy!! I think Red Delicious are waxy and tasteless in comparison....not really delicious at all. All the farmstand apples are great right now....bugholes and all!

Judged an apple pie contest a couple weeks ago, 13 entries. Had enough pie for a while. Ate a fresh one today. Very good.
