A boy in school in the sixth grade on Monday morning is given a dull knife and a piece of soap. The art teacher says the project this week is soap carving. The teacher then points to a picture on the wall of approved carvings. The teacher then begins a demonstration of how such carvings should be performed, and in the matter of minutes the fatty oily substance is turned into a form that somewhat resembles a polar bear. Amused is the class with the demonstration, and they begin to jump into the task of carving polar bears, Eskimos and all other creatures that might normally be white. A boy in the back of the class though does not start his carving and the teacher begins to take notice.
The teacher brings this to the attention of the class and asks the boy why he has not started carving a wonderful polar design.
The boy simply says, "soap is for washing and not meant for art, I have three sisters and soap will never last at our home"
The teacher frowns and walks over to the boy, in a stern voice explains this is the project of the week. You will be graded on Friday for how well your soap art is. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday pass and the boy sits in the class, most of the other students have went through several bars of soap, making all types of designs, yet this boy still sits with the one bar of soap given to him. Not a single notch, nor a single carve has been made.
The bell rings, end of class. The teacher has the boy stay after class, once again for a further explanation. The teacher demands an answer. Why the student has not started his carving. The boy simply once again says. "Soap is for washing and not meant for art, I have three sisters and soap will never last at our home"
The teacher raises his voice and makes threats of failing grades, while dismissing the boy. The boy takes the soap home which makes the teacher very happy.
Friday morning arrives. Each and every student other than the one problem boy has a piece of carved soap on their desk ready for inspection and final grading, the teacher is very upset. Almost mad to the point of pulling out his hair, not even taking the time to admire the wonderful art created by the rest of the students. The teacher begins to yell. WHERE IS YOUR SOAP ART? WHY DID YOU NOT CARVE THE SOAP AS YOU WERE INSTRUCTED??
The boy simply responds "soap is for washing and not meant for art, I have three sisters and soap will never last at our home" at the same time, while making his statement pulls out a single piece of wood, a polar bear like the rest of the class. Though simply carved from wood and painted white. Not carved from the soap like the rest of the class.
The class begins to laugh, and the boy is sent to the principals office for disrupting the class. The boy receives a failing grade and is suspended from a day of school and told to return to school on Tuesday.
