Oh about 12 years ago... maybe if you do not know we started off as a window washing company. We used to clean windows for a couple companies, maybe you recognize their names. Mountain Jacks, Bakers Square, Fitness Experience (national franchise that went belly up) Wendy`s on Eureka, Rio Bravo. At this time I was very happy making my $15 dollars every two weeks cleaning glass. Always thought to myself. WOW!.... how fortunate am I to be working for such big companies. As long as we continue to do a good job for them, we will continue to get paid. The never ending cash flow. Lifetip #1 Do not ever think that any company is more sound than yours. You are at the helm daily and making decisions daily that can provide positive results and a fit outcome for your business. The large companies take longer to respond to negative actions. In most cases their slow response rate leads to declining profits and another store closing. Step up, make positive decisions daily, and keep a close eye on what is coming in, and what is going out daily. If you do this, you will talk about the large companies you used to work for or serve that are now closed. They will never talk about you wondering what happened.

Couldn't have said it better myself!! I am thankful everyday and know it can all be taken away in a heartbeat! When I hired in at Republic Airlines in 1985 (now Northwest Airlines, soon to be Delta), I always thought my job would be secure because I worked for a major airline and they would always need me......wellllllll, that sure changed a few years ago when the company busted the mechanic's union. It sure put things into perspective and I now knew it could just as well happen to me (gate agent). The company started closing down stations in other citites....well outsourcing the work to other companies for lower wages and laying off the Northwest employees. It happened in over 75 cities across the country. I was so happy to have started my own business three years prior to all of this happening. The reality really hit that I may someday be in the same situation, even though I have 23 years....like that even matters these days. Life can sure throw you some curve balls and you do need to keep a positive attitude even though sometimes it is hard.....remember, somewhere, someone else has it much worse than you!
Doing business between DADBA members helps us all....Always remember to look for a DADBA member first and frequent DADBA members establishments. It will keep us all employed!

Nancy, I agree that life can throw us some curve balls and you do need to keep a positive attitude even though sometimes it is VERY hard.
I remind myself daily that somewhere, someone else has it much worse than I do. People who work for someone else, a company or a brother-in-law or a small corner store are ALL at someone else's mercy, and subject to job loss. That is the major reason I work for myself.
When I was a nurse, John worked days and I worked midnights so that John could be home with the kids in the evenings and I covered in the daytime and we would not have someone else raising our children. But then comes the curve ball--
First the hospital made cut backs and my hours were cut. (We adjusted.) The next change was my shift. They changed me to days--without my permission. (After 25 years on midnights that was a horrible adjustment.) Then they transferred me to a new department and at nearly 50 years of age I had to learn a new technique in a different area of the hospital.
Well, that was big time stress, and I prayed hard for a solution. It was then that I started my own business and retired within 18 months. Best move I ever made! Thank God!
When you work for someone else you are at their mercy because they are always they are always thinking of THEIR BOTTOM LINE, not ours.
Blessings, Linda PS. I really love Kevin's picture on this post--sexy!

Thanks Sue, posted that back in July 2008. I love it when older posts are brought back up. My feelings are no different now, my thoughts at this point though are wishing all the names I mentioned were still open and in business.
