Talking with a member. I told her about our great potluck saturday. She said "Wow that sounds like it would been better than my Saturday evening"
She was like you need to call that something else. She stated, When I think of potluck, I think of a bunch of old grannies sitting around eating casseroles. I laughed for a minute, and said it`s more like a bunch of sailors who have been out to sea for 30 days. But to be fair, I asked her what she would call it.
She stated: You should call it the DADBA monthly extravaganza or DADBA supper spectacular.
I chit chatted for a few minutes, thanked her and went on my way. I kinda like DADBA supper spectacular though. Then thinking more about it. If you dress a goat in silk, it`s still a goat.
Then again times are changing, a monthly potluck as described by wilkpedia::: A potluck is a gathering of people where each person is expected to bring a dish of food to be shared among the group.
So looking at the definition. Expected and Sharing are very strong points of a potluck, and might not be a fit anymore in this world. It might be a little old fashioned with all this high technology that is present everyday. I say a little old fashioned is what this group needs. It is not the potluck that has changed over the years, it is the person. So going back to the basics in some parts is exactly what is needed.
Talking with another member who I am friends with. Having a very tough time with his business. I ask Why don`t you come to a IBR? (informal business roundtable) His response: If I come to one of those it makes my business look weak, it looks like I need some help, how am I supposed to network with everyone as a strong business owner, when I am trying to get help?
I had to simply shake my head at his response. I had to tell him that is the most ridiculous answer I ever heard. (thinking to myself it does makes a little sense) So I explained to him. Honesty goes hand in hand with business. You coming to a IBR is honest. You needing and asking for help is honest. You meeting other people at a IBR is honest, as they also need some help or want new ideas. Also you coming to a IBR shows you are committed to your business and the continuation of the learning process. It is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength. What is a sign of weakness is the roughly 400+ members that do not attend. I asked him, do you think they are all doing so well?
I think he understood and we will see him at a IBR very soon.
Back to the basics. Group gatherings such as potlucks. Group help sessions such as the IBR. Exactly what is needed in this group. A little old fashioned goes along way. All the hustle and bustle, all the technology. It is time to make sure old fashioned is present with high tech.
